SMEG is 60% owned by Engie, 20% by the State of Monaco, 15% by EDF, and the rest by private investors.
To support Monaco's transition, the Prince's Government and Société Monégasque de l'Électricité et du Gaz (SMEG) pooled their skills in 2017 to create Monaco Energies Renouvelables (M.E.R.), with the aim of giving Monaco 100% green electricity production capacity equivalent to the territory's consumption.
Public lighting became electric and, on 23 December 1936, Louis II, Prince of Monaco, granted a 30-year concession to SMG, Société Monégasque du Gaz, a newly-created subsidiary of CIG (Compagnie Industrielle du Gaz). All of Monaco's energy production was then provided by subsidiaries of French companies.
In 1952, a three-party agreement (Monegasque State, GDF, SMG) clarified relations with France, allowing the gas plants in the Principality to be closed. And in 1976, the Monegasque energy sector was restructured with the takeover of SMG by SME, to create SMEG. The 80s marked the culmination of this complete reorganisation.
