However, only a few studies focus on China's nickel recycling from EV batteries. Elshkaki (2020) analyzed and estimated the flows and recycling of 16 materials, including nickel, in the electrification of passenger vehicles (PVs) in China up to 2050, with the assumption for different fixed lifetimes of EVs and batteries in two scenarios.
Under different scenarios, the maximum annual nickel demand is expected to range from 205.97 kt/yr to 1625.43 kt/yr and the accumulation by 2050 varies from 3980.15 kt to 21,971.18 kt. The current production capacity (105.05 kt) and reserves (2800 kt) of primary nickel is impossible to meet the future nickel demand for EV batteries in China.
It is anticipated that the battery industry's share of global nickel consumption will increase from 7% in 2021 to 37% in 2030, second only to its share in steel ( Nickel Institute, 2022; Vale, 2020) ( Fig. 1 a .).
The results indicate that China's current production capacity and primary reserves of nickel cannot meet the growing nickel demand, especially under the High EVs–LNCT scenarios, and closed–loop nickel recovery from EV batteries can effectively alleviate the demand–supply contradiction.
In China, more and more nickel has been stocked in the consumption stage, and most of the nickel flowed from consumption to obsolescence currently comes from batteries as other nickel-containing products with longer lifespan are still in use, such as stainless steel ( Zeng et al., 2018 ).
